Detailed description

Zalbastari region in Albania is one of the poorest areas in Europe and relies heavily on cultivation of crops as a means of survival. As bees provide a great source of income as well as nutrition for poor families as well as help the environment and sustain the surrounding eco-system the RC Clubs of Gubbio and Korça, in synergy with Heifer International, are providing 125 beehives for 25 poor families so that they may help to pull themselves out of dire poverty. Training is provided on beekeeping and the marketing and sale of bee byproducts. At the end of one year, the beehives are split and another 125 beehives will be donated to another 25 families thus creating a self sustaining project. The donation ceremony was held in July. The beehives, bees and necessary equipment were donated to the initial 25 families. The project caught the attention of the Government. The First Lady, Teuta Topi and a representative of the Ministry of Agriculture joined Rotary and Heifer in the ceremony.
