Little Mountain Clean-up

Clean-up of a wilderness area that had been polluted by illegal dumping over the past 10 years.

Completed

Detailed description

Parksville AM Rotarians, working with the local community, spearheaded a project to clean up a pristine area of wilderness at the base of Little Mountain in Parksville. This area had been subject to illegal dumping for many years. The base of the mountain could only be reached on foot; therefore the clean-up effort required the use of a helicopter to lift out the accumulated garbage, which included appliances, tires, sofas, beds, shopping carts, car parts, computer parts, bikes, golf balls and household waste. This was a major effort, requiring six advance sessions on the mountain slope, preparing the garbage for lift-off by the helicopter. Once lifted off the mountain, many volunteers were required to sort and transport the garbage for disposal.
