Irvine Rotary recognized a need for vocational training for local college students in the area of interview skills. Most college students are from the millennial generation and though they are strong writers and technically savvy, they have limited access to mentoring from older professionals in an interview-type environment. Irvine Rotary teamed up with its community service partner, Irvine Valley College, to teach students crucial interview skills to compete in the competitive job market. The event started with a short workshop where students learned to identify common mistakes made in interviews. Then, each student had 25 minutes with a panel made up of Rotarians and invited business professionals who volunteered their time to conduct “mock” interviews of the students. Students were interviewed by panels of 3 professionals and then critiqued and given positive input to both improve their self confidence and interview skills.
