Winning the game for Children's Literacy! The Rotary Club of Providence and the club's charitable foundation partnered with former sports legends and people from the media to put on a gala. The gala honored a Literacy Champion-Malcolm Mitchell, a former U. of Georgia and New England Patriots football player. Malcolm, who is 26, shared his own struggles as he was unable to read throughout high school. He joined a book club at a local book store while in college in order to learn to read. His professional career ended after only one year at which time he wrote a children's book and started a foundation to support literacy. Other legends attending the gala were former Bruins, Celtics, and New England Patriots. The club solicited over $50,000 in sponsorships; $19,000 in-kind donations and the live, silent and countdown raised an additional $28,000 for literacy. In the 114th year history of the club this was the club's largest amount raised by the club in one evening.
