Westmont Bethel Hospital in Guatemala city is dedicated to caring for the poor who, without them, would have no medical care. The hospital was poorly equipment but did the best it could to help the local Mayan population. Area 7 Rotarians, in Santa Cruz County California, pooled their resources and with the help of the Sunnyvale, Cupertino, Ashland and Oklahoma City Clubs, wrote a Global Grant to equip the hospital's maternity ward. Infant and maternal mortality rates are very high in Guatemala, especially among the Mayan population. The Westmont Bethel Hospital could not handle births with complications because they did not have the proper equipment. In February 2011, 33 Rotarians traveled to Guatemala and, with the help of Guatemala Norte and Assist International, installed everything the hospital needed to bring their maternity ward up to date. Now, they can help the Mayan mothers and infants and lower the mortality rates.
