Free cataract surgeries were carried out on over six hundred (600) patients from within and outside Rivers State. This project is a partnership with 'Surgical Eye Expedition' (SEE), University of Port-Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) and Rotary Club of Port-Harcourt G.R.A. However, the support from Rotary GRA is via a district grant. Before the exercise a wide publicity was carried out by our Rotary club to sensitize the people on the availability of the free cataract surgeries. Afterwards a week was used for a screening exercise to qualify those who actually needed the eye surgeries. The surgeries commenced in the preceding week from the screening. In all all of the over six hundred patients had free successful surgeries. This went well and the patients were very excited to regain their sights and were also very thankful to Rotary International and other partners.
