In the aftermath of a divisive socio-political crisis in Nicaragua, the Rotary Club of Ciudad Sandino and its Rotary Community Corps of Nueva Vida came together to work toward understanding and creating peace in our community and families. Our two groups spent three intensive days completing a basic training in Alternatives to Violence Project. AVP is designed to enable participants to deal with conflict and violence in new and creative ways. The program draws from the shared experience of participants, using interactive exercises and activities, discussions, games and roleplays to examine the ways we respond to situations where injustice, prejudice, frustration and anger can lead to aggressive behaviour and violence. Following the success of this project, our group plans to train a group of 25 new facilitators to work with Rotary Clubs and RCCs throughout Nicaragua and District 4240.
