For 5 years the Rotary Clubs of Ciudad Sandino, Nicaragua and Santa Barbara Sunrise, CA worked together with the Rotary Community Corps of Nueva Vida and the Municipality of Ciduad Sandino to determine how to bring potable water to two rural communities that had limited access only to contaminated water. After the Municipality of Ciudad Sandino invested $150,000 in drilling a new well and installing storage tanks, the two Rotary Clubs received this Global Grant from Rotary International to install a distribution network to pipe the clean water into 506 homes, two elementary schools, two health centers and a community learning center. A Community Water and Sanitation Committee (CAPS) was elected, legally formed and trained in maintaining, operating the system, safety and charging for water. The CAPS oversaw community participation in trenching and pipe laying for a total of 36 hours for each house totaling over 18,000 volunteer hours.
