Detailed description
NicaPhoto is an extended day school supplementing the half day that the 8-18 year old students from Nagarote's poorest neighborhood are not in public school. Very few of the student's parents are literate and most do not have the skills to assist with the educational development of their children. The NicaPhoto program seeks to break the cycle of poverty and empower severely disadvantaged children to reach their full potential. Children attend without charge and receive a hot lunch from food grown in NicaPhoto's biointensive garden. Students are also tutored in math, Spanish, English and technology, as well as dance, music, photography, karate and soccer. A full time psychologist is available for classes and one-on-one sessions with students and families. NicaPhoto has outgrown the small rented facility it has used for 10 years, so this project works on new expanded facilities to improve water and sanitation with bathrooms & kitchen; finishing and equipping classroom, offices, library.
