Detailed description
The ability to read at an early age is a strong factor in success in life. In partnership with BookSpring, our clubs have seen to it that EVERY student has books of their very own that they can pick out twice a year. These books are appropriate to their grade level and language. Working with the librarians at each school, the students participate in a Books For Me event, where they read a special story, do some fun activities, and then pick out their books. Rotarians help with setup, giving the books to the students, and also putting the student's name in the book. That sense of ownership kindles a joy of reading. We have also partnered with The Dictionary Project to provide dictionaries in Spanish and English for Pecan Springs. Dictionaries are critical to success on standardized tests, and are also an excellent resource for young learners. Finally, our club members tutor kids at JJ Pickle Elementary in reading - not only to help the kids, but to show them we care.
