This project worked with a well-established afterschool program through NicaPhoto to benefit 85 children primarily with families from the barrio of Sonrisa de Dios, one of the poorest neighborhoods in Nagarote, Nicaragua.
Focusing is on the healthy development of the whole child, the project worked to improve tutoring and school reinforcement with an emphasize on Spanish and Math, providing books, school supplies, and other educational materials to be used at the after school program. School uniforms were provided to all students receiving honors and all students graduating from elementary school as an incentive to continue their education. In addition to tutoring programs, the children are provided with a hot, nutritious lunch daily, as hunger and malnutrition are common issues among their families. To improve nutrition, the project improved the kitchen at NicaPhoto by purchasing a full size stove, industrial blender and other kitchen supplies.
