Detailed description
The 2,250 residents of two rural Nicaraguan communities of Trinidad Central & Cuajachillo #2 get their water from wells that have tested positive for contaminants including fecal coliform bacteria. Since 2013,Ciudad Sandino Rotary Club has partnered w/ Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise to work on long-term solutions to water issues in these villages while carrying out smaller District Grant projects in health, including ongoing training for 8 health promoters from these villages. Building on this experience, the Clean Water Filter Project used local collective Aquafiltro to make & provide ceramic water filters & train health promoters in proper filter usage. Promoters were then tasked w/ training 532 heads of household in filter usage, delivering filters & carrying out follow-up visits. This model of local materials, local knowledge & local leadership model proved very efficient. In follow-up visits community members report less family illness & savings in purchasing bottled water.
