Detailed description

The Sushma Koirala Memorial Hospital (SKM) for plastic and reconstructive surgery in Sankhu/Kathmandu, Nepal was co-founded 20 years ago as an aid project by the German non-profit organisation Interplast-Germany e.V. It conducts surgery free of charge for the local poor Nepalese population. SKM is mainly funded by donations and by the voluntary service of physicians and medical assistants. The focus of the treatment is plastic and reconstructive surgery like in the case of cleft upper lip, or, deformations of the hands or legs as well as serious burnings. The hospital is in need of a second intensive-treatment facility, as the existing one is overloaded. Our joint international service project involving our partner clubs in Germany (project lead), Italy and France aims to promote and foster community service and international service, two key Rotary Avenues of Service.
