Detaillierte Beschreibung
For the past three years, Sabah Wildlife Department (SWD)’s Wildlife Rescue Unit (WRU) has been overwhelmed with an alarming increase in the number of orphaned elephants with a total of 16 individuals rescued within a space of only 3 years and in need of care. Debbie Mair from Rotary Hutt City was there when the first 2 orphan elephants were brought into Sepilok. Through Dr Sen Nathan, she has tried to help.
One of the major challenges that we face with orphaned elephants is to provide them with milk replacement and the main objective is the establishment of the Non-Governmental organisation (NGO) named Borneo Elephant Conservation Alliance (BECA). Fonterra NZ has provided milk powder so that a full trial can be conducted. Deb returns to Borneo 1/7/16 to collate trial data. It is hoped to sign a deal with Fonterra NZ to supply cost priced milk powder to BECA. Saving $80,000+ per year
